On a holistic farm, the farm is looked at as a whole and the cattle operation is combined with the crop operation to produce synergistic effects. Examples include turning cattle out after harvest to allow grazing on any grain that was dropped by the combine, plus additional grazing on cover crops and alternate plants (commonly called weeds), that grow as the primary crops mature and dry down. The cattle’s solid and liquid output also improves the soil.

Mono cropping (the growth of one species of plant only), rarely occurs naturally. Whelan Organic Farms simultaneously grow up to three cash crops, a few cover crops, and because we are organic, several alternate plants all in one field. This more closely resembles how Mother Nature does things and it takes advantage of the mycelium network below the root system (rhizosphere) to transport and exchange nutrients amongst various plants.

While the Organic certification system is primarily a marketing and standards system, it also means no herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, or chemically produced fertilizers are added to the soil. This allows the mycelium network to flourish.

Constantly removing cash crops from the land eventually creates shortages of various minerals required for healthy nutrient-dense crops. The Albrecht system starts with soil testing and involves the addition of organic minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, to balance the soil. When required, it also includes the addition of minerals, such as Phosphorous, Sulphur, Zinc, Copper, Boron etc. These minerals are added to the soil to help move it closer to its original mineral spectrum, and to increase the flora and fauna in the rhizosphere, thus producing a thriving ecosystem in the soil, which in turn produces nutrient-dense foods for animal and human consumption.

Cover Cropping

At Whelan Organic Farms, cover crops are seeded with the cash crops at a very low rate – one of each of the cover crop plants per square foot. This allows the cover crops to tie into the Mycelium network, bringing all the advantages without competing with the cash crops for nutrients and water. Cover crops are not harvested like cash cro

At Whelan Organic Farms, cover crops are seeded with the cash crops at a very low rate – one of each of the cover crop plants per square foot. This allows the cover crops to tie into the Mycelium network, bringing all the advantages without competing with the cash crops for nutrients and water. Cover crops are not harvested like cash crops, instead, they are used to rejuvenate the soil and they enable the rhizosphere to continue pumping sunlight into the ground after harvestable crops have set seed and started to dry down. If the fall is long and frost free, cover crops continue to convert sunlight into sugar and other products that may be used by future plants until winter sets in.
